Award winner David Goldblatt arrives in Gothenburg.

11/22/2006 In complete contrast to the South African summer, it was a grey and rainy day that met David Goldblatt when he visited the Hasselblad factory in Gothenburg to see where his 2000 series camera had been made.

He was in town to receive his award - The Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography for 2006. The prestigious award ceremony takes place in Gothenburg, home of the Hasselblad cameras and the Hasselblad Foundation. In conjunction with the prize giving is a new exhibition, David Goldblatt's first solo exhibition in Scandinavia, consisting of a selection of work from a number of Goldblatt's essays.

While in Gothenburg, many prize-winners take the opportunity to visit the Hasselblad factory and this occasion was no exception. While examining the latest Hasselblad digital products, David Goldblatt mentioned how he works these days. Over the years he has worked with a variety of cameras and has used his old Hasselblad for portraits and aerial work in particular. After a long career of commercial assignments that spanned a variety of fields, David Goldblatt now concentrates on his own 'documentary' projects. He shoots film, both black & white and colour negative at present but realises that very soon he will go over to digital capture completely, not least to avoid the amount of retouching often needed with scans. 'Darkroom' work nowadays is done in collaboration with a lab in Johannesburg, where he sits with a computer operator and works on his pictures to produce prints just the way he wants them.

In the future, he will certainly be using his new H system camera to make more memorable images. For a deeper insight into his important work visit the Hasselblad Foundation website.
